the beginning
On to the new Olympic Sculpture Park. I was there this past weekend for the grand opening, but today was my first visit in the daylight. "Wake" was amazing in its scale, I felt I was standing alongside a ship. Something about the surface of it begs to be touched (but don't touch! the guards will yell at you) If you do sneak a touch, you'll find the steel warm and inviting. The soft curves somehow make these massive sculptures gentle. I couldn't get over how perfect the Calder "Eagle" looks in this setting. I can't ever remember appreciating it when it was in Volunteer Park, something about it struck me as dated looking. But here, with the backdrop of the Olympics and nothing else to detract, it is truly graceful and strong. This is just the beginning. It will be interesting to see how the park evolves over the years. As the plantings grow in around the sculptures, the sculptures will become rooted to the earth. Right now they all seem to be floating on the surface.
